human systems dynamics and applied complexity research network

We are an international, interdisciplinary HSD research group working together to investigate the complex dynamics in human systems.

We notice what is emerging, make meaning across difference, and turn insight into Adaptive Action.

[ shared learning ]

We make our work visible through tools, studies, stories, presentations, and publications so others can test, adapt, and extend it. We use complexity sciences and story-based sensemaking—to hold complexity without reducing human experience, context and relationships to categories.

a living discipline

Our work calls for research that is both rigorous and humane, practical and theoretical, local and global. We speak for HSD as a living discipline for people facing uncertainty.

Ask: What? So what? Now what? Next what?

Look for relationships, not just variables

Protect dignity and lived experience.

Share tools, findings, failures, and questions.

Learn what works, for whom, under what conditions.

Support and celebrate life.

our commitments

our research stance

We study systems from within them.

We participate, observe, act, learn, and adapt.

We seek rigor without rigidity and usefulness without oversimplification.

our call to action

Let us build containers strong enough to hold difference and flexible enough to invite emergence. Let us move knowledge across disciplines, generations, cultures, and communities.

We invite all who care about human systems to join us: notice patterns, make meaning, take Adaptive Action, and serve human thriving.

Founder of HSD

Glenda Eoyang

Glenda Eoyang is the founder of Human Systems Dynamics.

From 1986 to 2003, Glenda established a theory and practice of Human Systems Dynamics based on her research in Complexity Theory. In 2003, she founded the Human Systems Dynamics Institute to build a foundation for continuing inquiry and practice.

Since then, the Human Systems Dynamics field, the Institute, and the network of HSD Associates have emerged as powerful forces for change:

  • Interdisciplinary community of scholars and practitioners who develop and test HSD theory and practice, and continue to push the boundaries of thought and action

  • More than 900 certified HSD Professionals supporting their colleagues and clients to influence human systems dynamics

  • Human Systems Dynamics Global Association established in 2025.
